CONWAY, SC– Conway Medical Center (CMC) is pleased to offer the first low-dose computer tomography (CT) screening test for lung cancer in Horry County.

“CMC understands the importance of early detection,” states Dr. Hafez Hayek, Medical Director of CMC Sleep Lab and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. With lung cancer being the third leading cause of cancer in the U.S., it is a common health problem in our community.  The majority of patients that are identified are diagnosed with an advanced stage of the disease, which makes treatment more challenging. Low-dose CT, like other screening tests, can potentially find cancer early, when it’s easier to treat.”

The screening criteria are:

  • Between 55 and 74 years of age

  • History of cigarette smoking of at least 30 pack-years

  • If former smoker, quit within the previous 15 years

At this time, insurance providers are not covering the screening exam.  CMC is offering this as a self-pay exam and the cost is $199, which covers the CT scan as well as the radiologist interpretation fee.  In addition to the screening CMC also continues to offer QuitSmart smoking classes throughout the year.
