CONWAY, SC–Conway Medical Center (CMC) has expanded its services to now offer neonatal and pediatric echocardiograms.
Neonatal and pediatric echocardiograms is a safe and painless procedure that is an ultrasound test using high frequency sound waves for viewing of the heart and helping doctors detect structural abnormalities. It also shows valve shape, motion, narrowing or leaking of the valves. Children and adults have an echocardiogram performed when their physicians wants further testing because they are experiencing symptoms such as irregular heartbeat, unexplained chest pain, shortness of breath or passing out. For newborns, this test allows the physician to evaluate the source of a heart murmur to determine if the newborn needs to be seen for an outpatient follow up appointment, or if the baby has a more serious condition.
All procedures are performed under supervision of CMC’s registered pediatric sonographer and are reviewed by a pediatric cardiologist. The results are then returned to the primary care provider. CMC began offering this service in March and is the first hospital in the area to provide neonatal and pediatric echocardiograms. For more details regarding this service call 843-234-6767.
