HEALTHREACH FACTS

HEALTHREACH Information
According to Census Bureau Statistics:
12% of the population of Horry County lived below the poverty level
Over 15% of our population lives with no health insurance - Many unemployed
Those who are employed but have no health coverage
Many live in rural areas and have no transportation or access to healthcare services

HEALTHREACH is Conway Medical Center’s medical outreach program to assist the area’s medically underserved population

HEALTHREACH began operations in 1997 with funding from the Duke Endowment and assistance from AVX Corporation to purchase the Medical Van.

HEALTHREACH personnel provide:
free screening services for the underserved/indigent population free of charge
services include blood glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure, height and weight
Special screenings for illnesses such as:
various types of cancer, stroke, dental care, special Mercury Level

Screenings are addressing the leading chronic illnesses and causes of death in Horry County – heart disease, stroke and cancer

HEALTHREACH works with other community organizations such as Friendship Free Medical Clinic, SOS Healthcare, Caring 4 Kids, Department of Social Services, Horry County Health Department, Conway Housing Authority, Myrtle Beach Housing Authority, local police departments, Churches Assisting People and Help 4 Kids

HEALTHREACH has provided services to over 10,000 adults and approximately 1,000 children

HEALTHREACH personnel see an average of 40 at each screening site

2002 - 2004 HEALTHREACH personnel have seen:
44% + reduction of elevated blood pressure
45% + reduction of elevated blood glucose
36% + reduction of elevated blood cholesterol

Most persons screened on the HEALTHREACH Van have no medical insurance and no family physician. Their medical care is obtained in hospital emergency rooms. Through these screenings, we hope to discover these medical problems and educate sufferers as to proper diet and/or treatment to remain healthy and active

In 1999 HEALTHREACH partnered with Friendship Free Medical Clinic to provide medical care in a clinical setting for working individuals unable to afford health insurance, yet, earning beyond the qualifying amount for government assistance.

Through HEALTHREACH funding, Conway Medical Center Foundation provides financial support to pay for rent and utilities for the clinic

January 2000 - November 2003
Over 30% of Medicare admissions at Conway Medical Center showed diabetes
as a primary or secondary diagnosis.
The number of all inpatient admissions and outpatient visits with a diagnosis of
diabetes totaled over 9,000

Over a three-month period in 2003 HEALTHREACH personnel reported:
11% of screenings found 11% of those screened showed elevated blood glucose levels.

HEALTHREACH provides funding for:
Conway Medical Center’s diabetes education initiative.
“Backpack Buddies”
A food and nutrition for children. Children without access to proper food
and nutrition when away from school are provided with a backpack loaded
with nutritional foods, including juices and fruits and vegetables
