November 27, 2006, Conway, SC- The children Dr. L.B. (Brad) Courtney, have recently given a gift of $25,000 to the Conway Medical Center Foundation to establish the Dr. L.B. Courtney Family Endowment in honor of their father, a practicing physician with Conway Medical Center and pediatrician in the Conway community for over 40 years.

The Endowment will be used to fund community outreach initiatives aimed toward assisting children in Horry County and will assist Conway Medical Center in providing the best in pediatric care.

Dr. Courtney attended the University of South Carolina and graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina in 1961. He came to Conway in 1964 with his wife, Carolyn, and their 6 children, and opened Conway Pediatrics, across from the old Conway Hospital on 9th avenue located downtown. At the time, he and Dr. Howard B. Smith (deceased) were the only two pediatricians in Horry County.

After his wife’s death in 1983 from cancer, he met and married Lynda Taylor from Myrtle Beach. Together they raised 8 children: Mary Caroline Vaught of Florence, Alys C. Lawson of Conway, Gwen C. Webster of Raleigh, Brad Courtney, Jr. of Conway, Cyndi C. Smith of Conway, Press Courtney of Conway, Jessica Sasser of Georgetown, and Lauren Hunter of Conway.

Dr. Courtney has served on the Board of Trustees for the hospital and continues to practice today. He also contributes his time to working with the Waccamaw Mental Health Center as a pediatric medical consultant specifically working with children with Attention Deficit Disorder.

Berns Massey, Executive Director of the CMC Foundation states, “We are very grateful to all of Dr. Courtney’s children to make this gift in his honor. He has served generations of families in this community with quality pediatric care and compassion. We will certainly be able to continue that legacy with this endowment.”

The CMC Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation established in 1988 as a charitable organization to provide support for Conway Medical Center. Resources for the Foundation are obtained from donations, memorial gifts, planned gifts, grants, special events and other resources.
