(Myrtle Beach, SC, Dec. 11, 2008)…In this season of giving, the Tanger Outlet Centers in Myrtle Beach are spreading the spirit of joy and hope to those in our community that are facing breast cancer. As part of Tanger’s national effort to battle breast cancer, the Myrtle Beach Tanger Outlet Centers recently donated $69,000 to Conway Medical Center Foundation for the Mammography Initiative through the Stanley K. Tanger Breast Cancer Fund. Tanger’s 2008 donation was presented during a special ceremony on December 1, 2008 at Conway Medical Center.
“We are proud to have joined with our retail partners to not only raise funds, but to also create awareness for early detection, mammograms and self examination,” remarked Robert Leisen, General Manager of the Tanger Outlet Centers in Myrtle Beach. “Our goal is to continue providing hope and encouragement to breast cancer patients and their families in our area, and to keep working hard until a prevention and cure can finally be found,” added Leisen.
Tanger’s 2008 Breast Cancer Awareness campaign, which took place September 17 – October 20, 2008 raised money through an onsite program at Tanger shopping centers. For a $1 donation, Tanger shoppers received a special Pink Card that gave them bonus discount savings at participating Tanger stores. The Mammography Initiative was developed to assist women, who are unable to pay for the services, by financially aiding in screening mammograms, diagnostic mammograms, ultrasounds and clinical breast examinations. These services are offered to all persons regardless of age, race or ethnicity that do not qualify for The Best Chance Network.* To provide services to as many women as possible, Conway Medical Center has agreed to deeply discount the screening and examination services.
“We began providing services in September 2005 and to date, we have provided funding for 361 procedures and readings to 187 women amounting to $29,627 in services. We have paid out a total of $18,823 for these services” said Bern Massey, CMC Foundation Director. “As the demand for these services increase, CMC Foundation expenditures have continued to escalate.” Massey stated, “with donations from concerned companies, such as Tanger Outlet Centers, the Foundation can continue to assist individuals financially and save lives.”
Nationally, Tanger’s 16th annual Breast Cancer Awareness campaign raised 1 million dollars in 2008 at their 34 centers supporting the local efforts of more than a dozen different breast cancer organizations across the nation through the Stanley K. Tanger Breast Cancer Fund. This year’s campaign also helped the company reach an important milestone in its fundraising efforts. Since 1994, Tanger has now donated more than $6.1 million to help fund research, programs and facilities in the communities served by Tanger in 23 states from New England to California. This year alone, 178,480 women and 2,030 men will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. Approximately 40,460 women and 450 men will die from the disease according to the American Cancer Society. |
