Primary Stroke Center

Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability in the United States and ranks in the top 5 leading causes of death.

A stroke happens when a blood vessel in the brain is either blocked or ruptures. When this happens , the brain cannot get the oxygen and nutrients its cells need, and cells being to quickly die. The sooner a person seeks care, the better the outcome can be. That's why Conway Medical Center has developed specific stroke protocols to quickly diagnose and treat patients who come into the Emergency Department with stroke symptoms.

DNV GL Healthcare USA, Inc., has awarded a three-year certification to CMC as a Primary Stroke Center. This criteria includes integrating certain requirements of the DNV NIAHO® Hospital Accreditation Program, CMS Conditions of Participation for Hospitals, ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System, Guidelines of the Brain Attack Coalition, and the Recommendations of the American Stroke Association®.

And remember, the person experiencing the stroke may or may not be aware of what is happening to him or her, so the quick response of family, friends or others who recognize the stroke warning signs is critical.
