Telemedicine for Critical Emergency Care

Telemedicine for Critical Emergency Care

Conway Medical Center (CMC) is the first hospital in the area to an offer a telemedicine program that will give 24/7 access to pediatric critical care and emergency medicine specialists at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Through funding from a Duke Endowment grant, CMC has obtained a telemedicine cart that will allow CMC emergency room doctors to have access to 18 pediatric critical care and pediatric emergency specialists’ doctors at MUSC. Through the equipment, MUSC doctors will be able to examine the pediatric patient in close detail and be able to hear and see exactly what doctors in the room with the patient see and hear. According to the American Telemedicine Association, “telemedicine is the use of medical information exchanged from one site to another via electronic communications to improve a patient’s clinical health status. Telemedicine includes a growing variety of applications and services using two-way video, email, smart phones, wireless tools and other forms of telecommunications technology.”

“Telemedicine is a win-win-win for the specialist, who can see the patients and provide better assessments and care, for the provider, who can deliver a higher level of care right here at Conway Medical Center, and for the patient and their family receiving the treatment,” states Dr. Preston Strosnider, Vice President, CMC Medical Affairs.
