Phillip Sussman, DO completed his undergraduate education at the University of Florida, where he received a bachelor’s degree in Biology. He then earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Bradenton, FL. Following medical school, Dr. Sussman completed his orthopedic surgery residency at HCA Florida Healthcare/USF Morsani College of Medicine in Largo, FL. While in residency, Dr. Sussman began pursuing his interest in sports medicine by covering several high schools. After residency, He completed a sports medicine fellowship at Orlando Regional Medical Center. During his fellowship, he had the opportunity to work as a team physician for the University of Central Florida's football and basketball teams, the Orlando City SC professional soccer team, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and the 2022 Special Olympics equestrian events.
After fellowship, Dr. Sussman spent his first two years in private practice in southwest Virginia/northeast Tennessee, providing general orthopedic care to the community as well as sports coverage to Emory and Henry College and several area high schools. Dr. Sussman then had an exciting opportunity to further his sports medicine career by becoming a team physician for Coastal Carolina University through CMC Orthopedics. In addition to collegiate sports coverage, Dr. Sussman will also have the opportunity to provide specialized sports, shoulder, and knee care to the community of Conway, Myrtle Beach, and surrounding areas.
Dr. Sussman specialized in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder and knee. He also specializes in shoulder replacement procedures in addition to the ream and run procedure, which is reserved for patients who are young but with significant arthritis of the shoulder. He also has had training in orthopedic trauma and fracture care. He has a particular focus on the prevention and treatment of orthopedic conditions affecting patients of all ages. Dr. Sussman has a particular interest in ligament, tendon, and cartilage injuries of the shoulder and knee, in addition to shoulder replacement surgery.
Dr. Sussman has extensive experience with sports coverage during his training and years in private practice. He has provided care to patients at all levels of sports, from professional sports to weekend warriors.
When not seeing patients, Dr. Sussman and his wife, Heather, enjoy spending time with their dogs, a sulcata tortoise, and a non-releasable squirrel. Both Dr. Sussman and his wife are animal lovers and are very active in animal rescue.
