Samuel Andersen, MD

Samuel Andersen, MD,

Radiation Oncology

Samuel Andersen, MD, a board-certified radiation oncologist, holds a Doctor of Allopathic Medicine degree from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC. He is a proud alumnus of The University of Alabama Honors College in Tuscaloosa, AL, where he graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and a minor degree in the Randall Research Scholars Program.

He completed a four-year residency in radiation oncology at the University of Texas Health San Antonio MD Anderson Cancer Center, where he served as a Chief Resident in his final two years. Prior to his advanced program training, he completed a transitional year internship at Grand Strand Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, SC.

During residency, he participated in research and published academic articles on topics including standardizing patient care and reducing treatment-associated toxicity. As a Chief Resident, he was responsible for providing lectures to help train the next generation of radiation oncologists. He is passionate about education, with an emphasis on patient education – he strives to answer questions regarding radiation therapy and patient care plans, and he strongly believes in shared-decision making.

Dr. Andersen believes in a wholistic, patient-centered approach to care. He understands that treatment with radiation therapy can be a frightening prospect, but he also believes in its role in the comprehensive care of malignant conditions. He is also excited about its complimentary use in the management of some benign conditions such as osteoarthritis, arteriovenous malformations, and keloidal scars, to name a few.

He is skilled in the treatment of prostate, genitourinary, gynecological, gastrointestinal, thoracic, head and neck, hematological, central nervous system, connective tissue, and cutaneous malignancies. He has significant experience in many radiation treatment techniques including 3D conformal radiation therapy (3D-CRT), electron therapy, high dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy, intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), image-guided IMRT (IG-IMRT), volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), and radiopharmaceutical administration.
