Diagnosing Lung Cancer

Ion Robotic Bronchoscopy: Advanced Lung Nodule Diagnosis

Conway Medical Center is proud to offer Ion robotic-assisted bronchoscopy, a revolutionary technology that enables our pulmonary spets to diagnose lung cancer earlier and more accurately than ever before.

What is Ion Robotic Bronchoscopy?

Ion is a robot-guided system combining an ultra-thin, flexible tube with computer-based navigation. Instead of relying on traditional tools, Ion’s camera and sensors give doctors a clear, real-time view of the airways, allowing them to steer directly to small areas in the lung that could not be reached easily before.

Ion’s unique design allows your doctor to navigate the lung airways’ tiny bends and curves. From deep in your lung to its far edges, your doctor can biopsy nodules less than a centimeter wide – about the size of a pea. This capability means we can detect and diagnose lung cancer at its earliest, most treatable stages.

Who Benefits from Ion Bronchoscopy?

Ion robotic bronchoscopy is particularly beneficial for patients with:

  • Small lung nodules (less than 2 cm) discovered on CT scans
  • Nodules located in the outer regions of the lungs
  • Nodules that cannot be safely reached through traditional bronchoscopy
  • Patients requiring both nodule biopsy and lymph node staging

How Ion Works: Precision Through Technology

Advanced Planning Software:

Ion’s special planning software creates a detailed 3D airway map from your CT scan. The map shows possible paths to reach the nodule. Your doctor chooses a path and uploads the plan to the Ion system.

Shape-Sensing Navigation:

Ion’s ultrathin, ultramaneuverable catheter allows clinicians to reach small nodules in all 18 segments of the lung. Ion PlanPoint software uses patient CT scans to create 3D airway trees of the lung and navigation pathways.

Cloud Biopsy Technology:

Once the catheter reaches the nodule, Ion’s flexible, steerable tip lets your doctor collect multiple samples from different angles. We call this cloud biopsy. Collecting multiple samples from different areas of the lung nodule helps get the best results, especially in identifying lung cancer.

Why Choose Ion Robotic Bronchoscopy?

Enhanced Accuracy and Safety

Ion means less risk, a smaller incision, and a more comfortable patient experience. The precision of robotic guidance significantly improves our ability to obtain accurate tissue samples while minimizing risks associated with traditional biopsy methods.

Reaches Previously Inaccessible Areas

Lung nodules, small spots on the lung, can be cancerous, but many are located deep in the lung, where traditional tools struggle to reach. By guiding the robotic tube into those tighter outer airways, Ion helps doctors take a tissue sample safely and accurately.

Minimally Invasive Approach

Biopsies with the Ion system require general anesthesia and are usually performed as an outpatient procedure. An outpatient procedure means you’ll go home the same day.

Comprehensive Diagnosis in One Procedure

Ion technology allows our spets to not only biopsy suspicious nodules but also examine nearby lymph nodes for cancer staging, potentially combining multiple procedures into a single session.

What to Expect During Your Ion Procedure

  1. Pre-Procedure Planning: Your doctor will review your CT scan and use Ion’s planning software to map the best route to your lung nodule.
  2. Day of Procedure: The procedure is performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure, meaning you’ll go home the same day.
  3. Navigation and Biopsy: Using the robotic catheter, your doctor will navigate to the nodule and collect tissue samples from multiple angles for comprehensive analysis.
  4. Recovery: Most patients experience minimal discomfort and can resume normal activities within a day or two.
  5. Follow-Up: Your care team will discuss results and next steps based on the tissue analysis.

Getting Started with Ion Bronchoscopy

If you have been diagnosed with a lung nodule or are at high risk for lung cancer, talk to your primary care physician about whether Ion robotic bronchoscopy is right for you. A physician’s referral is required for all pulmonary procedures.

To schedule an appointment with CMC Pulmonary & Sleep Medicine:

  • Have your primary care provider fax a referral to 843-234-6889
  • Visit our Pulmonary & Sleep Medicine location page for forms and additional information
  • Contact our scheduling department for appointment availability

Leading the Way in Lung Cancer Detection

Conway Medical Center’s investment in Ion robotic bronchoscopy demonstrates our ongoing commitment to bringing the most advanced medical technologies to our community. By offering this cutting-edge diagnostic tool locally, we ensure that residents of Conway and the greater Coastal Carolina region have access to the same level of care found at major metropolitan medical centers.

Early detection saves lives. With Ion robotic bronchoscopy, we can detect lung cancer at its earliest stages when treatment is most effective and outcomes are best. Trust your lung health to the team that’s leading the way in pulmonary care.
