CMC Sports Medicine Fellowship

CMC Sports Medicine Fellowship

One-of-a-Kind Sports Medicine Training

Have you ever wondered what covering a surfing event would be like?
How about being a ringside physician at a combat event?

At Conway Medical Center Sports Medicine Fellowship, you can have that opportunity as well as many others. Conway Medical Center has brought sports medicine providers from all over the country to help create a one-of-a-kind fellowship.

With our partnership with Coastal Carolina University there will be division 1 coverage as well as a variety of other opportunities that are specific to the beach. We currently cover multiple high schools in Horry County, Surf Dream Foundation, Coastal Carolina University, a multitude of combat sporting events, and Grand Strand Sand, a series of sand volleyball events with the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP).

Throughout the year, each fellow will be given the opportunity to learn and practice OrthoBiologics as well as ultrasound techniques and practices. Dr. Jason Sharp, Program Director, has had extensive training and practice in both Platelet Rich Plasma as well as Bone Marrow Aspiration Concentrate Procedure. You will learn proper patient selection as well as the procedures in order to treat a myriad of orthopedic issues with OrthoBiologics and ultrasound.

A great relationship between Primary Care Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Sports Medicine is very important, and as a part of our fellowship, you will be given the opportunity to work alongside both to get the breadth of sports medicine. Our Non-Operative and Operative Sports Medicine Physicians work right next door to one another, which will give a unique perspective as to how to treat individual issues.

Join Our Sports Medicine Fellowship

Welcome, and thank you for your interest in the Conway Medical Center Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship. We invite you to explore our program as you consider advanced fellowship training in sports medicine.

This is a one-year, ACGME-accredited fellowship for two fellows annually, open to graduates of Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Emergency Medicine residencies. The program is designed for physicians seeking intensive, real-world preparation for modern sports medicine practice.

Our mission is to train primary care physicians into highly skilled sports medicine specialists capable of managing the full spectrum of the physically active population. Fellows build on their core training while developing advanced expertise in injury prevention, musculoskeletal conditions, concussion management, and performance-related care. Graduates are prepared to function as clinicians, consultants, educators, and leaders across clinical, sideline, and community-based settings.

Through our partnership with Coastal Carolina University, fellows gain direct exposure to Division I athletics and the full continuum of traditional sports medicine coverage -from high school football across Horry County to collegiate sideline care. This experience is further expanded through elite event coverage, including beachfront volleyball tournaments, surfing competitions, and boxing events, placing fellows in diverse, high-performance environments that sharpen clinical judgment, adaptability, and sideline confidence.

Procedural training is a defining feature of our fellowship. Fellows receive high-volume, hands-on training in diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSK-US) and ultrasound-guided interventions across all major joints. Training includes joint, tendon, and tendon sheath injections; nerve and tissue plane hydrodissections; percutaneous needle tenotomy (PNT); casting and splinting; fracture management; and concussion care. Fellows also gain experience in advanced regenerative and outpatient procedures, including platelet-rich plasma (PRP), hyaluronic acid injections, and prolotherapy – developing true procedural mastery through repetition, breadth, and progressive autonomy.

This experience is intentionally structured to produce graduates who are not only well trained, but fully prepared to enter independent, high-level sports medicine practice from day one.

We look forward to the opportunity to work with you and to be part of the next stage of your development as a sports medicine physician.

Sincerely,

Iridi Pavliqoti, MD, FAAFP, CAQSM
Program Director, Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship
