Specialized Emergency Heart and Stroke Care

Conway Medical Center has been recognized for our ability to quickly provide the highest standards of care to stroke and heart attack patients. We are certified by The DNV GL Healthcare USA, Inc as a Primary Stroke Center and also awarded by the American College of Cardiology with a Chest Pain Center Accreditation.

Primary Stroke Center

Stroke is a leading cause of long-term disability in the United States and ranks in the top 5 leading causes of death.

A stroke happens when a blood vessel in the brain is either blocked or ruptures. When this happens, the brain cannot get the oxygen and nutrients its cells need, and cells begin to quickly die. The sooner a person seeks care, the better the outcome can be. That’s why Conway Medical Center has developed specific stroke protocols to quickly diagnose and treat patients who come into the Emergency Department with stroke symptoms.

DNV GL Healthcare USA, Inc., has awarded a three-year certification to CMC as a Primary Stroke Center. These criteria include integrating certain requirements of the DNV NIAHO® Hospital Accreditation Program, CMS Conditions of Participation for Hospitals, ISO 9001:2008 Quality Management System, Guidelines of the Brain Attack Coalition, and the Recommendations of the American Stroke Association®.

Chest Pain Center

The American College of Cardiology has recognized Conway Medical Center (CMC) for its demonstrated expertise and commitment in treating patients with chest pain. CMC was awarded Chest Pain Center Accreditation based on rigorous onsite evaluation of the staff’s ability to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients who may be experiencing a heart attack. CMC is the only hospital in Horry and Georgetown counties to earn this ACC accreditation.
Hospitals that have earned ACC Chest Pain Center Accreditation have proven exceptional competency in treating patients with heart attack symptoms. They have streamlined their systems from admission to evaluation to diagnosis and treatment all the way through to appropriate post-discharge care and recommendations and assistance in patient lifestyle changes.
Hospitals receiving Chest Pain Center Accreditation from the ACC must take part in a multi-faceted clinical process that involves: completing a gap analysis; examining variances of care, developing an action plan; a rigorous onsite review; and monitoring for sustained success. Improved methods and strategies of caring for patients include streamlining processes, implementing of guidelines and standards, and adopting best practices in the care of patients experiencing the signs and symptoms of a heart attack. Facilities that achieve accreditation meet or exceed an array of stringent criteria and have organized a team of doctors, nurses, clinicians, and other administrative staff that earnestly support the efforts leading to better patient education and improved patient outcomes.

Bringing the Best Care to You Through Technology

Telemedicine for Critical Emergency Care

Conway Medical Center (CMC) is the first hospital in the area to an offer a telemedicine program that will give 24/7 access to pediatric critical care and emergency medicine spets at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Through funding from a Duke Endowment grant, CMC has obtained the latest innovative equipment that will allow CMC emergency room doctors to have access to 18 pediatric critical care and pediatric emergency spets’ doctors at MUSC. Through the equipment, MUSC doctors will be able to examine the pediatric patient in close detail and be able to hear and see exactly what doctors in the room with the patient see and hear. According to the American Telemedicine Association, “telemedicine is the use of medical information exchanged from one site to another via electronic communications to improve a patient’s clinical health status. Telemedicine includes a growing variety of applications and services using two-way video, email, smart phones, wireless tools and other forms of telecommunications technology.”

“Telemedicine is a win-win-win for the spet, who can see the patients and provide better assessments and care, for the provider, who can deliver a higher level of care right here at Conway Medical Center, and for the patient and their family receiving the treatment,” states Dr. Paul Richardson, Vice President, CMC Medical Affairs.
Pediatric Telemedicine

CMC’s Emergency Department recently joined the Pediatric Critical Care Telemedicine Program in conjunction with the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). This program allows the Emergency Department Physician at CMC to have a real time consult with a Pediatric Critical Care Spet at MUSC. Via a state-of-the-art, high definition computer, a physician at MUSC can do a full comprehensive exam of the patient and give immediate recommendations for treatment to the Emergency Department Physician at Conway Medical Center.

Pediatric Emergency Care

Conway Medical Center has been accredited as an Advanced Pediatric Ready Emergency Department through the National Pediatric Readiness Project (NPRP) in partnership with the South Carolina Department of Public Health. This designation reflects a hospital-wide commitment to meeting rigorous standards in staffing, training, equipment, and protocols — all designed to address the unique needs of children during medical emergencies. With approximately 8,000 pediatric patients treated in CMC’s Emergency Department each year, this accreditation ensures our community’s youngest patients receive the specialized care they deserve, close to home.

As part of this commitment, CMC has a children’s waiting area and a dedicated pediatric emergency clinical space, designed to create a more comfortable and reassuring environment for young patients and their families.
