Conway Medical Center Unveils Third Hyperbaric Chamber to Meet High Patient Demand
The CMC Center for Wound Healing & Hyperbaric Medicine at Conway Medical Center continues to advance its position as the region’s premier provider of hyperbaric medicine with the installation of its third hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) chamber. This expansion makes the Center the area’s only facility to offer three HBOT chambers, significantly increasing access to this vital treatment.
The addition comes in response to consistently high demand, with the Center’s existing two chambers operating at full capacity. The new chamber will help meet the growing need for hyperbaric oxygen therapy in the community, delivering 100 percent oxygen at pressure levels greater than atmospheric pressure to promote healing.
“Our expansion to three hyperbaric chambers represents a significant milestone in our mission to provide advanced wound care to our community,” said Dr. Paul Richardson, Chief Medical Officer of Conway Medical Center. “With our existing chambers consistently at full capacity, this addition ensures we can meet the growing demand for this life-changing therapy that has helped countless patients avoid amputation and restore their quality of life.”
The science behind hyperbaric oxygen therapy is both sophisticated and elegant. “Under precise pressure conditions, oxygen molecules become more compact, allowing them to dissolve more effectively into the bloodstream,” explains Dr. Richardson. “This supercharged, oxygen-rich blood then circulates throughout the body, accelerating the natural healing process in ways that conventional treatments often cannot achieve.”
HBOT treatments at the Center are used to treat more than a dozen medical conditions, including:
- Diabetic foot ulcers
- Radiation injuries to tissue and bone
- Necrotizing infections
- Compromised skin grafts and skin flaps
- Arterial insufficiency and ischemia
Each treatment session lasts approximately two hours, with most patients receiving between 30 and 40 treatments as prescribed by their physician. The therapy is gentle and non-invasive and is covered by Medicare, Medicaid, and most insurance plans. The Center welcomes both physician referrals and self-referrals.
What Kinds of Wounds Can Hyperbaric Therapy Heal?
Diabetic Foot Ulcers
One common type of wound that hyperbaric therapy can effectively treat is diabetic foot ulcers. These ulcers, which often occur in diabetic patients due to poor circulation and nerve damage, can be challenging to heal. However, hyperbaric therapy has shown promising results in accelerating the healing of diabetic foot ulcers.
Radiation-Induced Skin Injuries
Patients who have undergone radiation therapy may experience skin injuries as a side effect of treatment. Hyperbaric therapy can help in the healing of these injuries by promoting tissue regeneration and reducing inflammation, providing relief to patients undergoing radiation treatment.
Non-Healing Wounds
Individuals with wounds that have not responded well to traditional treatments may benefit from hyperbaric therapy. This advanced treatment can stimulate the growth of new blood vessels and improve circulation to the affected area, helping non-healing wounds to finally close and heal.
