CMC Weight Loss Helps Patients Take Advantage of New Medicare GLP-1 Coverage
In this article:
As more effective treatments become available for obesity, CMC Weight Loss is helping patients navigate new options, including a recent Medicare initiative that could make life-changing medications more affordable.
New GLP-1 Bridge Program for Medicare Patients
The new Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program allows eligible Medicare beneficiaries to access certain GLP-1 weight-loss medications for as little as $50 per month. The program — which runs from July 1, 2026 through December 31, 2027 — is designed to improve access to obesity treatment while expanding the use of medications that have been shown to help patients lose weight and reduce the risk of obesity-related health conditions.
The program covers three FDA-approved GLP-1 weight-loss medications through a centralized Medicare process separate from standard Part D drug coverage:
- Wegovy® (injectable and tablet formulations)
- Zepbound® (KwikPen® only)
- Foundayo® (oral formulation)
To be eligible, patients must be enrolled in a Medicare Part D plan and meet BMI and health criteria.
- Patients with a BMI of 35 or higher automatically qualify.
- Those with a BMI of 30 or higher may qualify with at least one additional diagnosed condition such as uncontrolled hypertension, heart failure, or chronic kidney disease.
- Patients with a BMI of 27 or higher may also qualify if they have a history of certain conditions including prediabetes, prior heart attack, or stroke.
A physician must provide prior authorization through the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program. Patients are encouraged to speak with their provider to determine eligibility.

Treating Obesity Like the Disease It Is
For Dr. Zaher Nuwayhid, director of the Conway Medical Center Weight Loss Program, the expanded access reflects a growing understanding that obesity deserves the same medical attention as other chronic diseases.
“Obesity is a chronic disease, so we have to treat it as such,” Dr. Nuwayhid said. “Just like hypertension or diabetes, it requires ongoing treatment and long-term management. Making these medications more accessible gives many patients an opportunity they may not have had before.”
How GLP-1 Medications Work
GLP-1 medications work by helping regulate appetite and slowing stomach emptying, allowing patients to feel full longer and eat less. While they have become increasingly popular, Dr. Nuwayhid says the best outcomes occur when medication is only one part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
“For medical weight loss to be successful, it has to be accompanied by a diet plan and an exercise plan,” he said. “Medication can help patients get started, but lasting results come from building healthier habits that patients can maintain for years.”
A Program Built Around More Than Medication
That philosophy is at the heart of Conway Medical Center’s multidisciplinary Weight Loss Program. Patients receive individualized care from a team that includes physicians, registered dietitians, and exercise specialists who work together to create realistic, sustainable plans for long-term success.
Nutrition counseling helps patients develop healthy eating habits while monitoring body composition and progress throughout treatment. Supervised exercise programs through CMC’s rehabilitation center and gym provide additional support as patients become more active.
“Exercising is also a very important part of the weight-loss journey,” Dr. Nuwayhid said.
The CMC Weight Loss program brings together multiple layers of support under one roof, including:
- Physician-led medical weight loss with access to FDA-approved medications
- Registered dietitian services for personalized nutrition planning and ongoing monitoring
- Supervised exercise programs through CMC’s rehabilitation center and on-site gym
- Bariatric surgery for patients who meet the appropriate clinical criteria
- Combined surgical and medical approaches when indicated by a patient’s health history and goals
Every Tool Available
Depending on a patient’s medical history and body mass index (BMI), treatment may include GLP-1 medications, other FDA-approved weight-loss medications or, when appropriate, bariatric surgery. Conway Medical Center offers both robotic-assisted sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass procedures, and some patients benefit from combining surgery with medical weight-loss therapy.
“It’s really hard to fight this disease on your own,” Dr. Nuwayhid said. “Our goal is to give patients every resource they need, from medication and nutrition counseling to exercise and surgery when appropriate, so they can improve their health and maintain that success over time.”
Taking the Next Step
For Medicare beneficiaries who have delayed treatment because of cost, the new GLP-1 Bridge program may provide an opportunity to begin medically supervised weight-loss care. Dr. Nuwayhid encourages anyone interested in learning whether they qualify to schedule a consultation with CMC Weight Loss, where the care team can determine the most appropriate treatment plan for their individual needs.
